Advancing Cardiac Education with 3DMedical Tool and Mixed Reality

In collaboration with Sapienza University, JUMC has developed advanced educational cases focused on vascular diseases and interventional treatments, particularly related to the aortic valve and TAVI procedures. These cases were built using the 3DMedical tool, offering a comprehensive approach to understanding spatial relationships, procedural planning, and treatment options for conditions like aortic stenosis.

The 3D heart models were carefully segmented from CT scans provided by Sapienza, ensuring high anatomical accuracy. These models were then integrated into the 3DMedical tool with additional medical data, such as echocardiograms and X-rays, ensuring a complete multimodal visualization, enabling students to engage deeply with the heart’s anatomy and its structures in a more interactive manner.

The models were then transferred to HoloLens 2 mixed-reality glasses, enabling students to interact with the 3D cardiac models and better understand the spatial relationships involved in TAVI procedures. This approach enhances learning through immersive, hands-on exploration.

Below are videos demonstrating both educational cases in 3DMedical tool and in the immersive environment with HoloLens mixed-reality glasses:
